Warning to sellers following fraudulent money incidents

Alert message sent 10/03/2021 17:18:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

We’re investigating a number of incidents in Slough in which people have advertised items for sale on advertising websites. People posing as prospective buyers have attempted to purchase the items with fraudulent money or have conned the seller with sleight of hand tricks.

Please remember our crime prevention advice.
  • Where possible avoid cash payments and use secure sites like Paypal.
  • If you have to take cash payments take a second person with you as a witness and to check the money.
  • Do not arrange to meet in unknown roads or places, instead choose places where there will be other people and CCTV.
  • Take pictures of items before posting them so you have proof of condition in case of a fraudulent claim.
  • If you are selling items like mobile phones or digital tablets record the details such as the IMEI / serial numbers.
  • If you’re not happy with the buyer or something does not feel right then walk away, do not feel pressured to sell.
The Bank of England has useful advice on how to check for counterfeit banknotes.

Please report any offences to us on 101 or make a report on our website.
