Is your shed or garage secure enough?

We have received reports of cycles, motorbikes, and electric bikes being stolen from sheds and garages in the Chipping Norton area.

High-quality bikes, including electric bikes and motorbikes, can be extremely expensive—often costing anywhere from several hundred to several thousand pounds. Premium models can exceed £5,000, making them a valuable target for thieves. Their high resale value and demand, especially for e-bikes, means it's more important than ever to take steps to protect them.

Many of us have heard the phrase, “If they want to get in, they’ll get in.” While it’s true that determined criminals can sometimes bypass even good security, that doesn't mean we’re powerless. In fact, most thieves look for easy targets—unlocked sheds, poorly lit areas, or bikes left unsecured. By taking simple but effective steps like using high-quality locks, installing shed alarms, and anchoring bikes, you make it much harder for them and far more likely they’ll move on. Every added layer of protection is a deterrent—and it can make all the difference.

1. Record Your Bike's Details:

  • Take clear photographs of your bike from multiple angles.
  • Make a note of the serial number, make, model, and any distinctive marks or customisations.
  • Register your bike with a national cycle database, such as BikeRegister.
  • 2. Secure Your Shed or Garage:

  • Fit a high-quality hasp and staple with a closed shackle padlock.
  • Install a shed alarm – even a simple motion-activated alarm can act as a deterrent.
  • Use battery-powered lights with motion sensors outside sheds or garages.
  • Reinforce doors and hinges to prevent them being forced open.
  • 3. Lock It Down:

  • Use a heavy-duty chain and ground anchor to secure your bike inside the shed or garage.
  • Double lock your bike using two different types of lock – e.g., a D-lock and a chain lock.
  • Avoid leaving tools or ladders nearby that could be used to break in.
  • 4. Selling Online?

  • If you're selling your bike via online platforms (e.g., Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, etc.), avoid giving your full address until you're confident in the buyer’s legitimacy.
  • Where possible, meet in a public place or arrange to have someone else with you during the transaction.
  • Avoid taking photos that reveal your home location or security setup.
  • Let’s work together to prevent thefts in our community. Stay alert. Stay secure.
