Chiltern Rural Crime Winter Update

Alert message sent 20/02/2021 14:59:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

Over the coming year I’ll be organising a number of days of action to tackle problems in the rural community. I’ll be looking at existing schemes like Rural Spotters and developing the way in which we can communicate by using Whats App.

In the coming week local officers will look to build on the Country Watch Scheme and will be encouraging people to sign up to the scheme who are part of the Rural Community. This has been defined as: Offences that relate to farms, agriculture, wildlife, the environment and heritage sites where they are targeted due to their isolation or rural location.

From looking at figures on the Chiltern & South Bucks Areas one of the most reported crimes was attacks on livestock by dogs. With COVID there has been an increase in people walking in the countryside. I will be working with Farmers in trying to promote the impact on cattle and encourage dog walkers to be more responsible when out walking. We have obtained a number of Livestock in fields signs that we hope may help to reduce the problem and increase awareness.

Thames Valley Police have been working with NFU and looking at their research rural crime cost the UK economy £49.9m in 2019 a 12.1% increase from the year before. In Bucks this cost us £867,484.

We have also noticed an increase in tool, vehicle and trailer thefts which is being investigated. Your Neighbourhood team will be looking to develop with members practices to increase their security and we will be providing security marking for tools and machinery.

If you are a member of the rural community and would like to get involved please contact me and I will arrange for a pack to be sent out to you. With your assistance we can make a difference.
