Appeal for witnesses following an assault in Abingdon

Thames Valley Police is investigating a report of assault which took place in Saxton Road, Abingdon at 10pm last night (20/8).

Officers attended the scene where a man aged in his twenties had been assaulted.

There will be an increased police presence in the area while officers carry out reassurance patrols following the incident, and a scene watch will remain in place.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector James Senior, of Force CID Oxfordshire said: “I would like to reassure the public that we believe this was an isolated incident where both parties were known to each other.

“We do not believe there is a risk to wider members of the community however there will be an increased police presence in the area whilst we conduct enquiries with local residents and conduct reassurance patrols.

“I would like to appeal to residents who may have seen or heard anything at this time to come forward and speak to police. Officers will be visiting properties along Saxton Road as part of our reassurance patrols”

The victim was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A 21-year-old man from Abingdon has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and is in police custody.
