I had a suggestion from Simon, that some of you may not read my messages to the bottom !!!!! and may have missed the piece about the BT Call Blocker phone. He suggested I send it out again, but this time….at the top !!!

BT CALL BLOCKER PHONES.
If you do get a large number of bogus calls or you live with someone who suffers from Dementia, you might consider purchasing a BT ‘Call Blocker’ phone – please follow this link:
These phones are brilliant. They cost between £30 & £50. Whenever I go to public meetings and mention them, I always receive very positive feedback, from everyone that already has one.
You plug them in like any other phone and then programme in numbers you will accept – family, friends, doctors, hospital departments etc. The phone will then only accept calls from those numbers. If anyone else rings, it plays a pre recorded message that all calls are monitored, do you want the phone to put your call through, the callers have to identify themselves ? If you press ‘yes’, the phone flashes, so that you know a call has been received. You can pick up the receiver and hear, who is on the line. You can then press ‘add’, to add them to your permitted list, or ‘No’, in which case the call is terminated and that number added to a blocked list and will not get through again.
This is a really useful service.
This happened in a car park in Windsor Can everyone be aware of this and be on their guard ?? 13/1 Friday Noon, Alma Road, Car Park. The aggrieved was sitting in her car waiting for her husband. A man came up and said there was something she needed to look at outside her car. She got out of the car to walk around the car to see what he was talking about. When she got back in the car, she realised that her wallet had been stolen from her handbag. The man is described as white, not English, slight build, not very tall, in his late teens, wearing a denim jeans, jacket and a base ball cap.

A further update from Helen re the attempted SCAM perpetrated on her father:
Just to add. The email came from XXXXXXXX@yahoo.co.uk so the first part looked reasonable, but he was suspicious that it was a yahoo account, not a .com account.
The caller made an increasing number of demanding and aggressive calls, demanding that my father go to the post office to do a moneygram type transfer. In the end, he unplugged the phone and was later left a voicemail message stating that what he was doing was criminal, by holding onto the money that belonged to BT and that they would sue him. He added that they had locked his laptop, so he couldn't access the internet or use it.
Dad has spoken with the fraud department at BT and his bank.
I asked if he had reported it to the police, but responded that neither BT nor the bank mentioned he should do so and he didn't think anything could be done about it, as they were based in China. I urged him to do so, so that there is a record of it and to try to prevent this happening to anyone else.

He can do it online. It may well be that we can do nothing, but as Action Fraud is a National Entity, it may well feed into other investigations as well as alerting everyone, to a new prevailing scam.
I had a BT scam call today as well. Private Caller number withheld was displayed. It was from a lady with a very strong foreign accent, which sounded far Eastern, obviously operating from a very busy call centre. She informed me that she was calling from BT and there was a malware problem with the broadband. When I said I was not using BT she said it could happen on any broadband. When I tried to ask her questions she would not answer. I then told her I did not have broadband and she put the phone down.

NEXT HMRC SCAMS:
Happy New Year – I must have received 20 emails from ‘HMRC’ telling me I had a tax rebate – different amount every time !
I would not reply, even if it were £100m !
As we know HMRC, never advises customers of rebates by email. They always send a letter. But... I have recently received a telephone call (number possibly withheld, I did not check) which started…….‘This is the HMRC. We’d like to talk to you about your tax rebate……..’.
Another scam but it sounds very convincing. We really need to let everyone know how these work, to protect those who are vulnerable and would believe these calls.

Thought you might be interested in looking at the attached video which my neighbour kindly sent to me after I reported that our garage latch had been broken.
We live at: Halls Lane, Waltham St Lawrence, RG10 0JE
I put our car in our garage the 11th, around 20:00, I noticed that one half of the garage door latch was disconnected from the door, with the lock still intact.
Whoever did this also put a piece of wood at the bottom of the door, to prevent the door from opening, so that it appeared to be still locked.
Something similar has happened on a previous occasion, when the garage door padlock had been forced and broken, but left attached.
Nothing was taken. We have CCTV footage which shows someone doing this and checking my neighbour’s car door too.
We have already ordered the portable alarm you suggested so hopefully will act as a deterrent going forward.
Thanks David, all of us who have garages, where we store anything, garden equipment, overflow items from the house, wine !!! Should have one of the shed alarms. They just hang in the garage and take minutes to instal – you can just place them on a shelf ! You fob them on as you leave the garage / shed and fob them off as to enter – it could not be simpler – or cheaper !
You can also put them inside the back of vans for exactly the same purpose. If you park a van up leaving tools inside, they are a godsend. Vans do not have brilliant security in the back. One of these going off at 110 decibels, inside a metal tin can at 2 a.m. in the morning, would be deafening inside !!!
Point 2. CCTV. CCTV is not your first line of defence, that would be a burglar alarm. The new ones are wireless, simple to instal and much less expensive than in the past. They are not solely for luxury houses with stuff inside worth stealing. They are now a necessity for everyone. They are a huge deterrent and if houses in your road have them and you don’t, yours will be the house targeted by our opportunist thieves, who generally avoid alarms. Problem with alarms ???? People don’t set them ! If you have one, it must be set every time you leave the house – make it a habit – and – at night if you sleep upstairs, you must set the ground floor. Alarms now are zoned – Ground floor – first floor. They are also pet sensitive – so the old chestnut, we didn’t set the alarm because we have a dog …….. no longer applies. If you are considering an alarm, generally go first for a local trader, with a reputation to uphold in order to stay in business, rather than an impersonal nationwide franchise.
Point 3. You may not know you have been targeted. Someone may have walked up over your property, tried your garage / shed doors, or you side garden access. If they haven’t forced entry, or damaged doors or locks, you will never know. If you have CCTV which covers the front of your property and you see a report of a crime in your road or nearby, even though you have not been a victim, or appear not to have been a victim, have a look at the CCTV. You may have footage of an offender making an attempt at your property, which they never pursued, because your security was too good for them.
Point 4. You may have footage of someone acting suspiciously in the road outside. This may give us an image of an offender we recognise, or the actual time frame, rather than the ‘overnight’, we usually get.
David sent me some CCTV footage of a man trying the car door handle of his neighbour’s car, then walking past his house, showing undue interest in it. As I keep saying, rely on your instincts, they are always right, but we often override them. In this case, the man is wearing a padded jacket and a balaclava. Immediately his demeanour is suspicious.
I wanted to attach the CCTV, as it is a perfect example of what I mean, but then I thought….what if it was just an innocent neighbour with insomnia, out for an early morning walk, that I was branding, a suspicious opportunist thief !!! Anyway, you get the message.
Next – I have just had a call from Alan, re some fraudulent transactions from his bank account.
He has a laptop and just purchased a new printer, but he could not get it to work. It worked with his iPad, but not with the laptop. He ‘phoned’ Hewlett Packard Printer Support and was transferred to ‘Cannon Product Support’ in India.
They needed to proxy his laptop, in order to run a diagnostic. While doing that, they explained……that ‘his laptop was running slowly’….would he like them to clean it up for him ??? He said yes please. They ran more programmes. Have we heard that anywhere before ???
Eventually, they explained that this service had cost £49.99, could he please pay, using his debit card………………..This he did.
When he was explaining the story to me, I immediately became suspicious, because that is exactly the same wording used by the as the Windows Scammers and the same amount they charge to get your bank details.
Long story short, further amounts have been removed from his bank account !
