Staying safe online

Alert message sent 14/01/2022 11:54:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Dear Member
'Cyber-security' - or staying safe online - is one of the most important crime issues facing almost everyone today. The broad range of crimes covered - from scams, data theft to identity theft - is probably the biggest category of criminal activity, and its getting larger all the time. It is far bigger than burglary, for instance.

Normal neighbourhood policing, of course, does not really cover this issue, as it is not geographically based. In fact a lot of the criminals are based in other countries, so we need to be particularly vigilant ourselves. There is a mass of guidance out there (including on our '' website), and if you are familiar with searching for advice on the Internet you will not be short of information. But that raises two important questions:

1) People can be confused simply by the volume of alternative advice from different sources
2) Some people - old or young - are left vulnerable because they do not seek the advice they should - or put it into action.

What is the solution?

If you do nothing else to protect yourself, we strongly recommend following the Cyber Aware Action Plan from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the Govt. body that is the basis for most other advice out there. You will find the link HERE. Please pass this on to any friends or relations who you think could be at risk from cyber criminals, and, if necessary, help them to put this Action Plan into effect.

Stay safe online!
