Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

FIRST AN ACTION FRAUD CASE, CAUGHT BY THE BANKING PROTOCOL:

The police received a call from a local bank, as one of their customers was trying to make a withdrawal of a large amount of cash for roofing work, being done on their house.  This was an unusual withdrawal for them, though they have made several withdrawals of large sums recently.  They have memory issues, are confused and vulnerable.  The home also shows signs of long term neglect.  Apparently the builders cold called and said the work needed to be done and the victim agreed.  The victim, does not believe they are being scammed and says the builders have been really helpful.

If you see a builders van or a skip outside a neighbour’s house you feel may be vulnerable for whatever reason, let us know.  We will arrange for a PCSO / RBWM Community Warden to walk by and make discrete enquiries – never mentioning your name.  They will ask, what is being done and whether they have all the necessary paperwork / estimates / builders real contact details etc..  No legitimate builder would object to this process and would be grateful the client is being protected from scammers.

NEXT:  NOTTINGHAM KNOCKERS (YOUNG PEOPLE GOING DOOR TO DOOR, SELLING HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS) ARE OUT AND ABOUT RBWM  PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM THEM AND ALWAYS GIVE THEM THE SAME MESSAGE:

‘I AM SORRY, I DO NOT BUY GOODS AND SERVICES AT THE DOOR’

Then firmly but politely, close and lock the front door.  Many thanks to all those that alerted us to them.
