A warning from Duncan:

Hi Jeff,

A interesting SCAM which I fell for, hopefully without any adverse effect.

I received an email from a friend, which simply said:

‘PROBLEM – Hi, can I ask you a quick favour? Thanks – Paul’.

As I have regular contact with ‘Paul’ and occasionally, he does need my help, I did not suspect anything and responded.

It was though, a SCAM email.

Fortunately, I do not have any financial details on my computer.  I checked my security status and all appears to be OK, but had I had any bank details on my computer...???

Normally this sort of email asks you to click on a link, which of course I never do, but this simply required a straight reply and they have access to my details.

Dangerous – please let everyone know.

D

Please be on your guard.  This is the same type of Trojan that sends – ‘I am crying as I write this on a beach in Romania having been robbed of my wallet and passport……….’  It means the person who sent it’s computer has been affected and sent this to everyone in their personal address book.

Next from Talk Talk:

Hi Jeff

I am getting so called 'Talk Talk Engineers' calling me every day, sometimes twice a day.

They are calling from India, where they earn $150 a month, to read a script which tells you that the flashing lights on your router, indicate a fault.

This is entirely false.  The flashing lights, in fact indicate that its working !

They try not to go off script, but you can catch them out quite easily, as they are not technical and have very little actual knowledge

They will eventually get round to asking you to download ‘TeamView’ which is a free software, which hands them access to your computer.

They will then upload your email accounts and passwords and banking info if it’s there. They are criminals.

Every time they call, I register their number for blocking, but they use many different numbers.

Why do the phone companies allow these criminals to call us?

Regards

Fivish

It is a real problem, but so easy for a computer to generate new numbers on a daily basis to call from – getting around the call blocking systems.

If you have a Talk Talk account, please be aware the database has been hacked several times, so the caller already has a lot of information about you – account numbers, bill totals, dates of payments, minutes used / texts sent etc.  This makes the call appear much more genuine.

ALWAYS JUST PUT THE PHONE DOWN !

NEVER, NEVER……NEVER, TYPW IN A CODING OR HAND OVER / LET THEM PROXY YOUR COMPUTER.

NEXT the PPI calls:

Dear Jeff

We all know about PPI texts etc. but now I have received a letter by post on Saturday, completely unsolicited.

It tempts one with a free service, ‘simple form’ to complete and free return post !

On the second page, they asks for every possible detail of one’s personal life, DOB, previous names and addresses, a complete record of any loans, credit cards, mortgages or overdrafts ever held from any bank or etc., mobile and telephone numbers and email address.

The mind boggles at what could be done with all this information!

Jane

Many thanks Jane and excellent warning and reminder !
