Murder Investigation

Alert message sent 24/04/2022 21:28:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

From TVP Oxford

Our Major Crime Unit have today launched a murder investigation after a man aged in his fifties was found deceased at a property in Barton.
Officers were called to a fear for welfare of a man in Brome Place, Barton, at around 11.30am today and tragically located the body of a man inside the property.
Early investigations indicate that the man had been assaulted at around 9.30pm on Saturday evening near to the shops at Underhill Circus, but this had not been reported to police or the ambulance service at the time.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Mike Roddy of Thames Valley Police's Major Crime Unit, said: “We are in the very early stages of this investigation, but it appears that the victim has sustained head and facial injuries, which were not reported to or treated by medical professionals.
“Although we have launched a murder investigation, we are currently keeping an open mind as to the circumstances that have led to the man’s death, and we would urge the local community not to speculate on the incident.
“However, at this early stage, we do believe the victim may have been assaulted by an unknown man and woman at around 9.30pm on Saturday evening outside Barton shops and was knocked to the floor.
“We are aware that he was taken home by friends, and the alarm was raised to us this morning after he did not answer the door to these friends who were concerned for his welfare.
“I am appealing to anybody who was in the area of Barton last night between 8.30pm and 10pm and believe that they witnessed the original incident to please get in touch with Thames Valley Police.
“You can do so by making a report online or by calling 101, quoting incident reference 858 of 24 April.
"You can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers 100% anonymously on 0800 555 111.
“No arrests have yet been made, and naturally, this incident will cause concern in the local community, but we believe the assault to have been an isolated incident, and we are investigating the circumstances thoroughly.
“There is an increased police presence and scene-watches in place at the scene of the original assault and in Brome Place while our investigations continue.
“I would urge anybody with any information or concerns to please speak to any of our officers at the scene.
“Although formal identification has not yet taken place, the man’s next of kin have been notified and are being supported by specially trained officers at this time.
“My thoughts, and the thoughts of Thames Valley Police are with them.”
