Increase in Burglaries and Thefts of Keyless Vehicles

Alert message sent 08/11/2021 19:21:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

There has been an increase in reported burglaries and thefts of keyless vehicles across the area.

There are steps you can take to help avoid becoming a victim of these crimes.

Please close and double lock all doors and windows when going out, even if you are only away from home for a short period of time. Those 10 or 15 minutes on the school run or popping out to shops are all a burglar needs to break into your home.
Try to make your home look occupied by using timer switches on lights, radios and televisions.
Make sure your front door is illuminated by using dusk to dawn lighting that comes on automatically.
Keep all valuables and keys out of sight and away from doors, windows and letterboxes.
Consider purchasing and installing a video doorbell, house alarm or CCTV system.
If you have a key safe, ensure it is not visible to people passing by, but anyone tampering with it can be seen.
Don’t give thieves the tools to burgle your house, ensure sheds and garages are locked and secure.
Don’t advertise you are away from home on social media. Ask a trusted friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property.

When not in use, keep your electronic car key in a security pouch or metal box to prevent it being scanned by thieves to open and steal your car nearby.
Consider fitting a steering wheel stop lock as a physical deterrent.
Always manually check your vehicle has locked before walking away as electronic devices can be used to jam the electronic signal from your key fob to lock your vehicle. Scan the immediate area for anyone hanging around. If a potential thief who’s watching feels they’ve been spotted, they’ll probably move off.
Be vigilant and look out for your neighbours when they are not home. If you see or hear anything suspicious around houses with keyless cars in your area then please report it to the Police.

Please contact us if you have any information relating to crime in your neighbourhood. Report online at call us on 101 or in an emergency dial 999.
