Registering a new Neighbourhood Watch scheme

Alert message sent 07/04/2021 16:17:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

Neighbourhood Watch: for connected, active and safe communities. Increasing wellbeing and minimising crime.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, our Neighbourhood Policing Teams have noticed when out and about and having conversations with people that there has been a big increase in the number of informal community groups amongst neighbours. This might take the form of a Whatsapp or Facebook group or people might communicate with each other via an app like NextDoor. A lot of people have reported that they already look out for a vulnerable neighbour.
Neighbours participating in these groups look out for each others’ homes and property and share details of suspicious activity with each other and to police. The aim of this is to prevent crime occurring in the first place. They also are especially aware of people in the community who may need support because they are socially isolated or otherwise vulnerable. It’s about being good neighbours to each other and has a really positive impact upon crime and increasing community resilience.
We’re encouraging residents to register their group as an official Neighbourhood Watch scheme with OurWatch, which is the national network for Neighbourhood Watch schemes in the UK. There are several benefits to this, for example:
- You’re able to connect with other schemes in your area to help tackle issues (a postcode search on the OurWatch website helps you find other schemes in your area).
- Some insurance companies offer discounts on home insurance to Neighbourhood Watch scheme members. Some manufacturers of home security products offer this type of discount too.
- Your scheme may be eligible for funding to help provide street signage etc …
- You’ll have access to a constantly updated resource for crime prevention tips.
OurWatch is a valuable source of ideas and inspiration for getting your scheme off the ground and making it a successful one. To find out more about setting up a new scheme or if there is already one in operation in your area, go to or telephone 0116 402 6111.

PLEASE NOTE: If you're already part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme that has been registered with Thames Valley Police, it will be automatically have been registered with OurWatch: no further action is necessary.
