Be aware burglars are active across our town

Alert message sent 07/11/2019 11:13:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

Unfortunately with the clocks going back an hour and the dark evenings closing in, the first week of November has seen an increase in the number of residential Burglaries occurring across the Bracknell Borough area.
In each case the offenders targeted unoccupied homes, accessing insecure rear gardens and then smashing the glass in rear or side doors in order to get in, making untidy searches in order to find and steal jewellery and cash.
If you are home in the evenings keep an eye out for your neighbours and don’t hesitate to contact the Police on 999 if you see or hear a burglary occurring.

You can do a lot to reduce the risk of your home been targeted,
Always leave your home appearing to be occupied. In your absence lights can be switched on & off by plug in timer sockets or light bulbs with built in light sensors. Both are affordable, readily available and easy to install.  Alternatively there are an increasing number of  Wi-Fi connective smart systems that can enable you to control your homes lights, central heating and more via a Smartphone App form anywhere at any time.

Be careful not to publicise when you home is unattended on social media, post your holiday or party snaps once you are back home.

Whenever you leave your home unoccupied ensure all ground floor windows and any upper floor windows reachable from a flat roof are securely closed. That doors (Front, Back and Patio) are not just pulled to, but are securely dead locked as you go out and don’t leave keys in the locks. (in one recent burglary the intruder was able to access a set of ladders from the garage and then climb in through an insecure 1st floor bedroom window).

Motion activated lighting at the front of the house is a deterrent to intruders, as they don’t want to be visible to your neighbours or passing traffic.

Ensure that opportunist burglars can’t just stroll into your rear garden, by keeping gates shut and locked.

Keep items that could be used to break into your home such as ladders, tools and wheelie bins stored securely away.

If you are fortunate enough to possess expensive jewellery be discrete about sharing images of it on social media and keep it stored in a hidden security safe out of view of casual visitors to your home.

Home Alarm Systems do discourage would be burglars, and a system installed and maintained by a reputable company are recommended by police and insurers.
