FIRST: an attempted theft of a keyless car in Windsor:
31/1  Thursday 0.20 a.m.  Windsor.  The aggrieved was asleep, when he was awoken, by someone knocking into his bins.  He checked his CCTV and saw that a man had walked up to his front door, carrying a bag.  Another man, then approached the house twice.  They then managed to unlock his car on the driveway, using a device, which had copied the Key fob code.  The aggrieved immediately re-locked the car from inside the house.  The two men, then walked away in the direction of St. Leonards Road.  Normally he keeps his keyless fob in a metal tin, but that night, he had left it in a coat pocket near the front door.  If you have a keyless fob, it must never be left anywhere near your front door, where the signal can be copied.  Keyless fobs must always be stored in a metal container - a ‘Faraday’ cage.  Many people keep them in the microwave / fridge !
We are about to start community celebrations where they may well have large amounts of cash or jewellery in the home.  If you are about celebrate an event, please use extra precautions at this time.  Our ‘Opportunist Thieves’ watch the community calendars, for exactly this information
We have had several cases recently - particularly from supermarket car parks across the area.  They stand behind people when they pay for food and look over shoulders to note PIN numbers.  They then follow the person out to the car park and
  1. either go up to them and say there is something hanging down from under their car.  While one man takes them around the car, an accomplice opens the passenger door and steals credit cards from handbags or
  2. Follow the person out of the car park and then while they are driving, flash them to stop and then go through the same process - something is dangling from under their car.
Be aware that this is going on and be on your guard.
NEXT:  This week was ‘Modern Slavery Awareness Week’ across the force. We have been working with the ‘Willow Project’ can do for us.
The Willow Project, launched in September 2018, has been designed to provide support to any individual affected by ‘exploitation’. This could be sexual, financial, cultural or criminal exploitation and does include Modern Slavery.
The Willow Project will provide prevention work, crisis intervention and ongoing long term support and work directly with victims of any age, their families and anyone else who may also be involved in the care and support of them including community groups and other services. Their support for an individual is not time-limited, they provide it, for as long as it is needed, rather than prescribing a length of time.  This can range from one-off support, a few weeks, months or even years – simply put, as long as an individual needs their support they will get it.
If anyone knows of any victims or victims’ families, who may need support, please do refer them as part of our Safeguarding Strategy. Consent is needed, unless they are under 18 and there is an overwhelming need to support them.
Any further advice needed:

Hi Jeff,
Just letting you know that I just had a visit from a guy who said he was on a ‘young offenders programme’.
He did accept that I did not buy anything at the door and just walked off.
Kind Regards
Thanks Suzanne - A Nottingham knocker !
You did exactly the right thing.
If no-one buys from them, they will move onto another area.

FIRST:  from Helen, the old HMRC threatening telephone call:
Hi Jeff
I have just received a call from allegedly the HMRC, saying I have a fraud warrant on me, they asked me to press 1 and that if I refused I would be arrested shortly, I put the phone down and tried to report it at Action Fraud I could not get through.
You can always report matters to Action Fraud online if you cannot get through on the phone.  Last year we were plagued with these calls and they have re-appeared because the deadline for filing tax returns was yesterday !
Hi Jeff.
I recently had a text message reminding me about an appointment with NHS - and inviting me to phone them, if I need further info.  I have no appointment for the specific date/time and decided there was something dodgy about it.  Looking up on line I found the attached article which you might wish to be aware of.
Many thanks Joanne - a very useful link !
NEXT:  from Pam
Hi Jeff,
I came home on Monday at 4pm.  As I drove in, I noticed two men looking in a skip, in our neighbours garden.  When they saw me, they said they had been employed to clear our neighbour’s gutters and two or three others in the road.
Our neighbour’s gutters are so bad, they resemble the hanging gardens of Babylon - so at first, I was overjoyed to hear this news that the job was being done.
Then I was asked, if I wanted my gutters cleaned.   I assured him, they were ok.  He then produced pictures of our gutters, which he said he had just taken.  They appeared genuine.
He produced a bucket of mossy soil, he then informed me that a tile was damaged and the roof was letting in water - again photos were produced.
I said we didn't need it replacing, as I was getting suspicious.  We didn't have cash, so gave him a cheque, which we were surprised he took
On the next day, I checked with my neighbours and nobody, had had their gutters cleared, or asked these men to call.
They took our bucket and left an old brush and cannot see they took anything else. A friend has just checked and the gutters have not been cleaned slight damage to a roof tile was visible, but was not causing any problem.
I am worried these people could have been checking out opportunities.  Both men had dark hair one said he came from Manchester, about 5ft 8 and chubby about 20 years old.  The other one, was thin a little younger, may be both could have been travellers. we made the cheque out to M. Smith
he was the one who climbed the ladder. They drove a very clean looking small white van. Whether this is any good for you.
Yours sincerely Pam
I am grateful to Pam as her email raises several issues.  These people are opportunists and no-one should ever deal with them.  Please remember our NHW motto:
I am sorry, I do not buy goods or services at the door !
I would not have paid them anything !

Hi Jeff,
I would like to list my bicycle on a national database. But Google search brings up quite a few. Are any of these genuine and do you use them?
Should I register on more than one?
The one we recommend it ‘Bike Register’ or ‘Immobilise’.  Both are free.
There is a charge by Bike Register, if you want to include a photo.

Hello Jeff,
I have just received a voicemail on my mobile.  This is the first time I have ever got this sort of thing. I work in Maidenhead and my friend who is on your alert system, told me to send it to you, to warn others as I am sure this is a national problem.
I will now delete this off my phone. Hope it helps.
It is another computer recording from supposedly HMRC, threatening further serious legal action if you do not call back !
Delete it - it’s a scam
