Scam warning – Aylesbury Vale

Thames Valley Police is warning residents in Aylesbury Vale to be wary of unexpected telephone calls, claiming to be from banks or the police.

Two recent calls have been received by elderly residents in the area, either claiming to be from the fraud department of a major bank, or a police officer investigating a fraud.

The fraudster has given the householders various reference numbers and extension numbers to quote and also encourage them to call back to check their identity is genuine.

The criminal has then kept the line held open, so that when the victim dials out they believe they have got through to 101 or 999, when they are actually just speaking to another person involved in the fraud.

In one instance in Aylesbury Vale an amount of cash was handed over to what the victim believed to be a plain clothes officer, who turned up at their address.

Please be vigilant and make sure that you pass this information on to any elderly or vulnerable friends, neighbours and family.  No-one from the police or banks etc will ever telephone people to ask them transfer or hand over cash.

If you have been a victim of this sort of crime or if you want advice or information about fraud you can contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit their website.
