Weather warning

Alert message sent 20/07/2021 21:06:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Dear All

This is a weather warning for community safety.

The Met Office have issued an Amber warning which includes Oxford - this is Amber not just yellow so needs to be taken seriously.

It is a warning for extreme heat and is the first time such a warning has been issued. The Amber warning was released at 4pm July 19th and remains in force until Thursday midnight

What it means:
Adverse health effects experienced by those vulnerable to extreme heat
Some changes in working practices and daily routines may be required

Some heat sensitive systems and equipment may fail - expect power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
Travel delays with potential welfare issues for those experiencing long delays

Increase of people using coastal areas, lakes and rivers with higher risk of water safety incidents.

Keep drinking plenty of fluids - and note that the older we are the more we must ensure we are drinking enough - don’t wait until you feel thirsty but drink regularly throughout the day - have water to hand at night as well. Avoid alcohol!

Try to keep out of direct sun as much as possible - hats, sunglasses and sun screen are not really optional in these conditions!
Draw curtains to keep sunlight out - and move mirrors away from direct sunlight (yes fires have been known to start from reflection/deflection onto curtains and other furnishings).

Stay safe everyone
