Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

A VERY GOOD 48 HOURS

NO BURGLARIES

AND

NO CARS BROKEN INTO

FIRST - ANOTHER COURIER FRAUD IN MAIDENHEAD:

16/11  Monday 1 p.m.  An elderly resident received a phone call from someone, saying they were from her bank.  To convince her they were genuine, they confirmed her name and address.  The man went on to say that they had discovered problems with and abuse of her Debit card and.  They then asked her for security, for her card details and they also needed to confirm her PIN number - which she gave them.  They then said they would organise a courier to collect her card and send a replacement by Wednesday.  At 2 p.m., a courier arrived and she handed over the card.  The aggrieved’s daughter phoned later that day and this came out.  The bank were immediately informed and the card stopped, but there had been three charges on the account.  The last was for a large amount and was classified as ‘Pending’, which the bank could not cancel.  An investigation is ongoing.

NEXT: ANOTHER SEXTORTION CASE !!!

A man met a woman who lived in America online.  After a few messages, she suggested chatting outside the App.  This they did and shortly she sent ‘intimate’ photos of herself and asked him to do likewise ………. Which he did.
Immediately she sent a demand for money - or ….

He has not sent any money.  PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS BE YOU.

NEVER SAY, WRITE OR DO ANYTHING ONLINE, YOU WOULD NOT BE HAPPY FOR YOUR WORK COLLEAGUES, / FAMILY TO SEE !

NEXT:  I have had a lot of enquiries re garage breaks and how to protect them as people do store valuable items in them.

There are several ways of protecting garage doors.  There are mechanisms installed in the roof opening bars, but more effectively - because they are such a visible deterrent are ‘Garage Defenders’  These are sunk into and cemented into the ground in front of garage doors - they are usually bright red solid T bars - which prevent the door from being opened.  There is a simple locking mechanism, for their release.

They are available from most large online retailers and with a bag of ‘postcrete, fast drying cement, can generally be fitted by anyone, handy with tools.

Also - we recommend ‘Shed Alarms’ for garages as well as sheds.  Again easily available, from online retailers.  These are inexpensive, need no fitting, as they are battery operated and can be placed on a shelf.  They are fobbed on and off, as you go in or out, sound at 110 decibels and have a heat and movement sensor.  They are brilliant.  110 decibels in a confined shed / garage, is really loud in the early hours and will make anyone immediately make off !

VANS:
If you have a van containing valuable tools, you cannot unpack at night - think about one of these PIR sensor shed alarms, placed in the back - 110 decibels in the back of a metal Transit van - will sound even louder !

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

FIRST:  Into my police inbox - addressed to ‘hello my good friend’ - almost binned immediately.  It goes on to thank me for my help in the past, but there is still $850,000 in the account and if I email his secretary - and there is an email address provided with my full personal details and details of my bank account - he will organise a transfer of a portion of that money - ‘and share the joy’ !!!

Needless to say - it was binned - I followed my own advice !

NEXT: A SCAM RE GRANTS:

Hi Jeff

I had this email today.  It explained that I could apply for 2 grants available for 3 month periods.  There is a link below - ‘Apply Now’ - and the money will be in your account within 6 days !!

The English and spelling is poor, I knew it was a scam and binned it.

DON’T DO IT - DON’T LET IT BE YOU.

NEXT:  THE CHRISTMAS TREE TRAIL

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for noting our Christmas Tree Trail, which will happen from 9th – 24th December.

We can’t have the usual festival in church and I think this will be a fair substitute, bringing some cheer.  I am just concerned for the safety and security of those who take part – tree sponsors and visitors.

I am attaching the information that sponsors have had and also the fine details that they will get and that will go on the website.

Best wishes

Sally

St. Luke’s Christmas Tree Trail (CTT) 2020 - Details for participants

Thank you for taking part in our Tree Trail.

From 19th November the dedicated website will go live with a countdown and information about the trail.  The locations of each tree will be added after the closing date of 30th November.

https://stlukeschristmastreetrail.co.uk/
Beforehand

You may like to display a poster advertising the CTT

Please decorate your tree by the evening of Monday 7th December

Please place near/on/by your tree the laminated participant number that you will be send after 30th November

Please email a photo of the tree to: treephotos@stlukeschurchmaidenhead.org.uk  (If you are unable to do this, just let us know and we can pop round to take a photo)

We will walk the full trail on Tuesday 8th to check it out!

During the Trail
There will be a simple launch outside the church (regulations permitting) at 6pm on Wednesday 9th December.

The CTT will run from 9th – 24th December.

We assume that you will light your tree, please ensure that the lights are on between at least 3.30 and 8.30 pm (the website will state that tree will be lit ‘at least between’ those hours).  If you wish to leave lights on for longer that is fine but after 8.30 pm you can turn them off / draw your curtains etc if you wish.

You may place your tree outside your home or in a window but please ensure that it is in a safe place and take care with lights.

Be aware that members of the public walking the CTT may wish to get a close look.  If you do not want people actually on your property please close gates, etc.

Please remember that all voting takes place online – the participant poster will have the website address on it.

All donations are to the Thames Valley Air Ambulance / St. Luke’s Church and should also be online or at the church – please do not accept cash donations yourself - point people to the central system.

The church will be open for an hour or so each day of the CTT (details to come and restrictions allowing) for folk to drop off tags for the Memory Tree and Prayer Tree, or to make cash donations.  Tag templates will be on the website.

After the Trail
The CTT itself ends on Christmas Eve, when we will announce the winning tree (voting closes on  23rd).  You do not then need to make your tree publicly available.
Enjoy!  … and Happy Christmas !

NEXT AN AMAZON SCAM:

Hi Jeff,

Interesting scam recently - "Amazon", has been trying to scam me for months now (several calls a week), but it's just a computerised voice.
On Saturday, a real person called me.  I said "I don't have an Amazon Prime account" (actually another member of our household does, but not my surname and I sure as hell wasn't going to tell her that!).

Anyway, she said, "so how do we have your address and phone number then?" - "Err electoral register and phone book ?"  I hung up at this point - she seemed perplexed that I had a brain, it seems.

Alan

Thanks Alan - Breathe, think, take your time and just put the phone down !
