Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

This message is dated Friday 25th January 2019 for Maidenhead.

A very good 48 hours - very little crime to report.

NO BURGLARIES

AND

NO CARS BROKEN INTO

FIRST - A CASE OF RANSOME WARE.

It encrypts your entire computer.  You know if you are infected as you get a front screen, telling you your computer is infected and demanding money !  You cannot access anything on your computer, or get past the front screen cannot be recovered, without an encryption key.

23/1  Wednesday 2 40 p.m.  Windsor.  The victim, passed the police to their IT support department.  The computer was infected when the victim opened an attachment to an email.  The attachment, ‘appeared’ to be an outstanding invoice, which had not been paid.  The victim passed this attachment to others in the office, to check if ‘the invoice’ had in fact been paid.

Four machines and three servers, have become infected with ‘Global Imposter version 2’.  For most residents, this is not a massive problem.  There is only one way to remove it without paying the ransom and that is to have your computer reformatted.  That means it is reset to factory settings - you lose everything.  If you are a business, that can be catastrophic.  If the Ransom is paid, it often is set to reappear 6 months later, so is an ongoing problem.

These fake emails are very clever and really do look genuine.  This is an old scam - sending an outstanding invoice to a business - which works really well.
