A VERY GOOD 48 HOURS NO BURGLARIES AND NO CARS - BROKEN INTO
CARS PARKED UP AND LEFT UNLOCKED, IS STILL A REAL PROBLEM IN ASCOT
We do not really have this problem in Windsor & Maidenhead. Cars left unlocked, act as a ‘Crime Attractor’ to the area. If Opportunist Thieves hear that there are easy pickings in Ascot - they only have to walk around trying car door handles - it will draw them. News of easy pickings spreads quickly ! While trying car door handles …………….. the Opportunists, will also be looking at houses, for potential targets !!!
NEXT: A reminder about cold callers and why no-one should buy goods and services at the door.
A man cold called a local resident at 11 a.m.. He said to the woman that opened the door, that he had arrived to complete some work, organised by her husband on the driveway. She then tried to contact her husband for confirmation, but was unable to get through. She told the man to hold off, until she could obtain confirmation.
At 3 p.m., she saw two men working on her driveway, filling in potholes and asked them to stop. They said they would finish what they were doing as it was free, in preparation for the tarmacking. Later she saw they had done more work, but had left.
When her husband returned, she discussed this with him and he knew nothing about it and had never discussed the driveway with anyone or requested anyone to do any work.
In their initial discussions, I believe the workman said the work would cost £1,500. They returned the next day asking for £5,800 to complete the work.
The man is described as olive skinned, brown hair, 30 - 33 years old, about 5’10, medium build wearing chinos and shirt & jumper, wearing a Hi Viz jacket.
Fortunately, these two residents were strong and secure enough, to say no - go away and don’t come back, we are giving you nothing as we did not ask to have the work done ! Others may not have felt so confident, feeling vulnerable and paid what they asked.
PLEASE, NEVER LET ANYONE START WORK, UNLESS YOU HAVE REQUESTED THEM TO DO IT, HAVE AN ESTIMATE AND A WRITTEN CONTRACT. PLEASE REMEMBER OUR NHW MOTTO: WE DO NOT BUY GOODS AND SERVICES AT THE DOOR.
If you equivocate / say you will think about it / - they will take this as a YES !
ASCOT & SOUTH ASCOT:
