Alert message sent 03/05/2017 16:28:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

This message is dated Wednesday 3rd May 2017 for Maidenhead.

A VERY GOOD 24 HOURS – ONLY 3 CRIMES TO REPORT.

I topped my message to Ascot with the following message.  We all need to do more to protect our property and not, be an easy target.  Yesterday a van was broken into in Old Windsor – a van containing tools entered BY UNKNOWN MEANS – that means they did not have to force a lock, or break a window, to get inside.  Laptops, must not be left in cars overnight !  Often, when someone gets home, they will get out of the car, pick up valuable items, walk around the car and put them in the boot, unaware, they are being observed.  How do Opportunist Thieves, know there is something in the boot worth stealing ???  If you are going leave valuables in the boot, they must be put there, as you get into the car at your previous destination, not when you arrive and park up !!!

FROM TODAY’S MESSAGE TO ASCOT, WHERE THERE IS A REAL PROBLEM WITH RESIDENTS LEAVING, THEIR OFTEN HIGH VALUE CARS, UNLOCKED IN THE ROAD, OR PARKED BEHIND ELECTRIC GATES:

FIRSTI have just had a telephone call from PC Pete Bullett, from your local Police Neighbourhood Team.

He and PCSO Melita Diprose, have just carried out House to House enquiries, re the ‘car crime’ I reported in Murray Court.  Whilst there to discuss the one report of a car being entered by unknown means and searched, various residents informed them, of 4 others, which they had not bothered to report – apparently - because nothing was stolen – apart from some sweets from one car.

ALL OF THE CARS INVOLVED HAD BEEN LEFT UNLOCKED AND THERE WAS NO DAMAGE DONE.

The CCTV coverage retrieved as a result of these House to House enquiries, shows the Opportunist Thief, simply walking up to the car and opening the door.  He could see and knew the car had been left unlocked…… because the wing mirrors were still out.  When many cars now are locked, particularly Range Rovers and other 4X4s, the wing mirrors automatically retract.  Wing mirrors extended ….. the car is unlocked !

CCTV has been recovered re the other car entered and searched in Friary Road the same night. It shows an opportunist Thief, sitting inside the car …. Munching away on some sweets he found in the centre console !  A thief apparently, with a sweet tooth !  Perhaps the same offender as above ???

Pete and his team have asked me – once again – to put out a reminder to Ascot residents, that Opportunist Thieves have been attracted to the area, by the easy pickings, the number of cars they find left UNLOCKED and the apparent complete disregard by Ascot residents, for even rudimentary security precautions being taken.

As I keep saying – once you attract these Opportunist Thieves, because cars have been left unlocked, they will start looking out, for houses with less than adequate security.  We must show them that local residents, are security conscious.  Even though you may have only left sweets / sunglasses / a few pounds for parking in the central console – you will attract thieves !!!

We – all of us – must protect ourselves and our communities by doing the right thing – securing our property – we must build more

‘COMMUNITY RESILIENCE’

EVERYONE MUST LOCK THEIR CARS !
