Crime Update Friday 31st March 2017 - Maidenhead

Alert message sent 31/03/2017 11:27:00

Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

This message is dated Friday 31st March 2017 for Maidenhead.

We have had a Courier Fraud reported to us in Ascot – the second in the last month.  I was liaising with my colleagues yesterday over the border and they have also just had one, with virtually identical details.  The way the SCAM took place is different – the fraudster no longer says they are from the police, but from your bank !  SO can everyone be on their guard and warn everyone they know, who is elderly and vulnerable.

28/3 – 30/3  Tuesday 9 a.m. / Friday 5 p.m.  Huntsman’s MeadowCourier Fraud – On 28th the aggrieved was called by ‘Paul Williams’ who claimed to be the manager, from Barclays Bank.  He said that all the aggrieved’s credit cards had been compromised and needed to be cancelled.  To do this, he needed to have the cards collected asap and he would send a courier.  He then went through the aggrieved’s security information, including his PIN numbers for all of his three credit cards.  Whilst they talked on the phone (to prevent the aggrieved from talking to anyone else, or receiving calls) the courier arrived and he then handed over the cards.
Later, he began to think it was a bit suspicious and phoned his bank – Barclays.  They explained to him that it had been a fraud and a large amount of cash had already been removed from his account.

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

First re my message about the man going around in van selling’ ex-exhibition’ garden furniture

Hi jeff
The guy selling garden furniture from a van has also been here (Newlands Drive area Maidenhead) yesterday. He is polite and didn't do a heavy sell.

I was in the front garden, so he wandered in. I told him I wasn't interested and he left.

Next – The old Windows / Microsoft & BT Scam:

Dear Jeff,

I, like many others, am still receiving calls about problems with 'Windows'. I know you say not to talk to them, but….

My reply now is: "oh, at last. I expected you last week to come and clean them for me.  When can you come, and while you are here can you………..". There is silence and the phone goes dead.

However, a friend used to say: "Great ! Have you phoned to tell me I have won the competition for new double glazing" ?  Obviously confusion at the other end of the line before he is cut off.

Very many thanks for keeping us informed and best wishes to you and your team.

Valerie

Many thanks Valerie, if you are confident enough to do – ENJOY !  It can feel empowering that you are taking a stand against them !
