E-Bike and E-Scooter Operation |

North East Oxford Neighbourhood Team Engagement Day 🛴🚲 Today, officers from the North East Oxford Neighbourhood Team were on London Road, Oxford, carrying out a joint e-bike and e-scooter operation alongside a Have Your Say community engagement event. It was great to speak with so many members of the public and hear their concerns about issues affecting the local community. A recurring theme raised by residents was the use of e-bikes and e-scooters, particularly concerns around safety, speed, and legality. Throughout the day, officers engaged with a large number of riders and conducted checks on numerous e-bikes and e-scooters. While many riders were using their vehicles responsibly, unfortunately several were found to be illegal for use on public roads and in public places. These vehicles were seized, and their owners were provided with advice and education regarding the relevant legislation. Know the Law 🚨 ✅ E-bikes (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles) are legal if: • The bike has working pedals. • The motor provides assistance only while pedalling. • The motor output does not exceed 250 watts. • The motor assistance cuts out at 15.5mph (25km/h). ❌ Modified or high-powered e-bikes that can be propelled without pedalling or exceed legal limits may be classed as motor vehicles, requiring insurance, tax, registration, a driving licence, and a helmet. ❌ Privately owned e-scooters cannot currently be used on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes, or other public spaces. They are only permitted on private land with the landowner's permission. Riders risk having their e-scooter seized and may face prosecution. Thank you to everyone who stopped to speak with us today. Community feedback is invaluable in helping us understand local concerns and shape our policing priorities. If you have concerns about anti-social behaviour, illegal e-bikes, or the use of e-scooters in your area, please speak to your local neighbourhood team or report issues via the Thames Valley Police website.
