Police are appealing for information regarding a burglary which occurred over night of the 15th and 16th of May in Spelsbury. Offenders have broken through a back door and carried out a messy search of the address taking cash and jewellery. Avoid keeping large amounts of cash at home where possible.Don’t use obvious hiding places such as:- bedside drawers
- under mattresses
- kitchen cupboards
- wardrobes or freezers
If you must keep cash at home, consider using a burglary rated safe. Bolt it to solid concrete. choose a good hiding place for your safe, not in the main bedroom, under the bed, wardrobe floor or garage. Keep a cheap decoy safe semi visible and hide the real safe elsewhere. This works surprisingly well.Keep cash out of sight from windows and visitors. Photograph valuable jewellery and keep a record of:- serial numbers
- hallmarks
- engravings
- descriptions
Consider marking valuable items with a UV pen or forensic marking product.Store high-value jewellery in a secure safe when not being worn.Avoid leaving jewellery on dressing tables or windowsills where it can easily be seen. Lock all doors and windows, even when you’re at home or in the garden.Use motion sensor lighting and visible CCTV that streams straight to your phone.Keep keys away from letterboxes and doors.Install a house alarm.Don’t advertise expensive purchases or jewellery collections on social media.Make your home look occupied! Burglars often target homes that appear empty: Leave lights or a radio on timers.Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property if away.
