Dear all, Over recent weeks, several areas across Newport Pagnell and the Rural North have experienced a rise in burglaries targeting sheds, garages, and other outbuildings. Offenders are specifically targeting high‑value bicycles, e‑bikes, and motorbikes, often taking advantage of quick access points and minimal security. Even well‑kept neighbourhoods are being affected, so this is a good moment to review how secure your property is. Why bikes and motorbikes are being targeted High resale value: Quality bikes and e‑bikes can fetch hundreds or thousands of pounds within hours on online marketplaces.Low risk for offenders: Sheds and garages are often easier to access than homes, with less chance of confrontation.Quick getaway: Once stolen, bikes and motorbikes can be ridden away silently and rapidly. 🔐 How to Strengthen Your Shed or Garage Security 1. Upgrade the physical security Use heavy‑duty hasps and padlocks rated “Sold Secure”.Fit anti‑tamper screws or coach bolts to hinges.Install a shed/garage alarm — battery‑powered models are inexpensive and effective.Consider motion‑activated lighting around outbuildings.2. Secure the bikes themselves Even if someone gets inside, you can still stop them taking the bike. Use a ground anchor or wall anchor fixed into concrete or brick.Lock bikes with a Sold Secure Gold or Diamond‑rated D‑lock plus a secondary chain. For motorbikes, use a disc lock, chain lock, and anchor point.Store bikes out of sight from windows or open doors.3. Make your property less appealing Keep the area around sheds and garages tidy and visible — burglars prefer cover.Trim hedges and bushes that create hiding spots.Avoid leaving tools or ladders outside, as they can be used to break in. 📱 Tech that helps CCTV or video doorbells covering the garden or driveway.GPS trackers hidden on bikes or motorbikes.Smart plugs or lights to give the impression of activity. 📝 Record and mark your property If the worst happens, having details ready makes recovery far more likely. Register bikes on BikeRegister or Immobilise. We’ll be running more free bike/tool‑marking events in the near future to help you keep your items secure, so please keep an eye out for upcoming dates.Photograph your bike/motorbike, including serial numbers and unique features.Use UV pens or forensic marking kits to mark frames and parts. 🚨 If you see suspicious activity Report it to the police via 101 or online. If a crime is in progress or someone is in danger, call 999.Share non‑urgent concerns with your local neighbourhood policing team. For updates on future events please refer to Newport Pagnell | Police.uk . |
