With the sunny days now upon us and many of us eager to get out and enjoy the countryside, I wanted to share an important update for dog owners. From 18 March 2025, the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Amendment Act 2025 came into effect. This legislation makes it an offence for owners/walkers, to allow a dog to attack or worry livestock on agricultural land, as well as on roads or public paths. Police now have the power to seize dogs involved in such incidents, and Veterinary Surgeons may take samples or impressions from a dog as part of an investigation. The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 also requires owners to keep their dogs under proper control. As an owner, you remain responsible even if someone else is walking your dog. If your dog is deemed to be dangerously out of control, you could still face liability—and potentially a conviction. Please enjoy the countryside and local parks, but do so responsibly with your dog.
