We know electric bikes are a divisive topic. Some say we should focus on other priorities and “let kids be kids.” But public safety is our core duty — and we cannot ignore the growing number of young people in Wantage risking serious harm by riding illegal electric bikes. We’ve just received another clip — this time showing two youths riding an e-bike at night, no helmets, no lights, no safety gear. This was filmed in Wantage on the evening of 29/09. Sadly, this is becoming all too common. This video is available to view on our Facebook page. Let us be absolutely clear: these electric bikes are illegal. They are not toys — they are powerful machines, and many young people simply do not understand the risks they are taking, or the dangers they pose to others. To the parents: You have a responsibility to protect your children. Please, do not wait until tragedy strikes. We do not want to be the ones knocking on your door to deliver horrific news — especially when it could have been entirely preventable. If your child owns or rides one of these bikes, you need to act now. Make no mistake — this isn’t harmless fun. This is a serious safety issue, and it is your duty to keep them safe. To the young people: We’ve tried raising awareness and putting out educational posts. But it’s clear that stronger action is now needed. If you are caught riding one of these illegal bikes, you will receive 6 penalty points on what’s known as a “ghost” licence — which becomes active the moment you apply for your driving licence in the future. If you injure someone while riding, the legal consequences can be far worse. Please think before you ride. It’s not worth risking your future — or someone else’s life. We are now taking enforcement action. If you ride one of these bikes, you will face the consequences. Let’s work together to keep our community — and our young people — safe. — Wantage & Grove Neighbourhood Policing Team |
